DO YOU HAVE JOB SECURITY?
It seems that all we hear and read in the news these days is of companies laying off workers. In their attempts to down-size, trim, correct, or call it what you will, a lot of people are losing their jobs.
Automobile manufacturers, airlines, retailers are all cutting divisions, closing inefficient or unprofitable plants and laying off workers.
Some people say we are heading toward a recession. I don't think so.
In the nineties, we saw the leaning out of many large companies. A lot of dot coms went belly up and we did experience a recession. But we did learn to work more efficiently, and those of us who managed to keep our jobs adapted to new ways of doing business.
With all that has been happening lately worldwide, we have seen a slowdown in the economy, but I don’t think we’ll see a full recession.
What about you? Do you have job security?
If you’re counting on a company or an institution to take care of you, think about this. The US Social Security Board reports that 85 out of 100 Americans reaching age 65 don't possess as much as $250. And only 2% are self-sustaining (the rest dependent on family, church, or the government)!
You'll do well to remember that no one owes you a job. Companies are not in business only to provide for their employees. Most exist to fulfill a mission and to make a profit.
Don't get me wrong, some companies do try to take care of their people. It’s wise to offer benefits and incentives to attract and keep good people. But when Corporate HQ decides its time to tighten the belt...
Now you may be saying to yourself that "I belong to a Union, therefore I'll be taken care of". But how long can you live on strike pay? What will the working environment be like when every worker is thinking more about the possibly of a strike rather than how they're going to spend their retirement? Will a 2 or 3 percent increase over the next couple of years let you enjoy the lifestyle you want?
I’m not saying there isn’t a place for unions, but you must ask yourself if you can live with the decisions that will be made by those who are supposed to 'take care of you'. And don't think that just because you have been on the job for years and have 'tenure' that your job is secure!
There are things that can help secure your position within the working environment. You must learn all you can about your profession, keep up with the latest training and prove your value to your employers. Dedication and hard work are values which have been passed down through the generations, why, because they are as true today as they were 100 years ago.
Dedication, loyalty, ehtics, trust, knowledge are all traits which should have a great bearing on your day to day activities.
We don’t work for $10 or $20 or even $100 an hour. We work for the value of the results we produce—whether we’re working for ourselves or someone else.
If you want more security, become more valuable to the marketplace. Learn what you need to learn, develop the skills you need to develop and become the person you want to become.
That’s the way to have job security.
