Acronyms You May Have Seen and Heard
As most of us are fairly new to Internet Marketing, I felt it about time to explain what some of the many acronyms and abbreviations mean. You will come accross several of them in your daily business:
B2B - Business to Business: refers to trade between businesses rather than between businesses and customers.
CGI - Common Gateway Interface: A way web servers pass information to and from application programs. These 'scripts' can be written in several programming languages. Your web host may have some CGI scripts that you can use on your site. Just ask them.
CPC - Cost Per Click: Cost to an advertiser for each click on his/her advertisement. This can prove to be a very cost effective way to advertise on some search engines. Also see PPC.
CPM - Cost Per Thousand: The amount charged per thousand impressions (showings) of an ad. This is used more in banner advertising but can be used in newsletter/ezine advertising.
CSS - Cascading Style Sheet: Used to define how elements in a web page are displayed instead of relying on HTML code. Makes designing web pages more flexible and reduces the size of the page code.
EZine - Electronic Magazine (Newsletter): Just as it says! What you are reading is an Ezine.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions: Self explanatory and a good thing to have on your website if anything seems a bit confusing.
FFA - Free-For-All Links: Web pages that allow anyone to add a link back to their own website. Not an effective method of advertising unless you have your own FFA page and can capture email addresses (normally upgraded members only). You can get your own FFA page here:

GIF - Graphic Interface Format: A compressed image format commonly used on websites to save download time.
HTML - Hypertext Markup Language: Easy to learn code for building webpages. You can find many tutorials on the Internet. One of my favorites to use is at: www.boogiejack.com
HTTP - Hypertext Transfer Protocal: A protocol which enables information on the Internet to be accessed from anywhere, by anyone. It's what allows you to jump from one Web page to another by pointing and clicking.
IP - Internet Protocal: A predefined set of rules used to enable computers to communicate with each other, regardless of which operating system they are running.
JPEG - Joint Photographics Experts Group: Another image compression format commonly used on webpages.
MLM - Multi Level Marketing: Probably one of the most effective methods used in marketing. Most affiliate programs where you build a downline of distributors are examples of MLM companies. SFI is an excellent example of this type of marketing. Simply register for free and check them out for yourself:

PFI - Pay For Inclusion: Paying to have web pages included in a search engine's database.
PPC - Pay Per Click: Ad sales or affiliate commissions where a set amount is paid for each click on a promotional link by a consumer. Many search engines are designated PPC Search Engines where you open an account, submit your website (ad) and only pay a pre-determined amount when someone clicks on your link. This can be a very successful and cost effective way to get prospects/customers.
PPI - Pay Per Impression: Where an advertiser pays for each display (impression) of their advertisement (usually a banner).
PPL - Pay Per Lead: Where a commission is paid for each sales lead generated by an affiliate. A "lead" is usually defined as somebody who signs up for a free trial, or requests further information, etc.
ROI - Return on Investment: How much profit is made after advertising and other costs have been subtracted. Will require a good tracking system in place to be able to track the results of your ads. The affiliate program at this link has a tracking system affiliates can use free of charge:

SE - Search Engine: A searchable database of pages on the Web (like Google). Different from a directory (like Yahoo) in that pages are not reviewed by a human editor before inclusion.
SEO - Search Engine Optimization: The process of optimizing web pages to achieve high rankings in the search results in order to attract more visitors.
SFIMG - Six-Figure Income Marketing Group: One of the most popular and fastest growing Internet Marketing companies on the Internet today. SSI - Server Side Include: A way for a web server to include variable values and information from an external source into a web page as it is requested by the browser. Uses include automatic display of data like the Last Modified date of the page, or storing common page elements in their own files, enabling site-wide updates by modifying a single file.
URL - Uniform Resource Locator: This is the address of the web resource. For instance, the following is the URL for the Reciprocal Links page on my web site:

XHTML - eXtensible Hypertext Markup Language: It is the first big change to HTML in years. By adding a few simple structural elements of XML to HTML pages, you can be assured that your Web pages are compatible with later versions of HTML.
