Common And Costly Mistakes That Most Affiliates Make
Affiliate Programs are probably the easiest and least expensive forum for most people to start a home business. They give everyone a chance to get a piece of the Internet pie.
They are, for the most part, free to join, easy to implement and pay commissions. Combine that with a wide variety of products and/or services and they become very appealing.
Lots of people have joined affiliate programs in hopes of making their fortunes, however most of them are making mistakes that can cost them thousands of dollars each year.
The following are what I believe to be the most costly mistakes Affiliates are making:
1. Not Focusing
With so many programs to choose from sometimes affiliates can't decide which one to promote, so they join many programs all at once and attempt to promote all of them.
Sometimes this happens because they are trying to create multiple streams of Income which is OK but it must be done properly in order to be successful.
Since they have so many programs that need to be advertised and managed it's just too much. Ultimately none of the programs are very successful because none get the attention they require nor the proper promotion.
The way to get the best results is to join one program that pays at least 40% commission, promote it and once it's producing a reasonable profit then look for another program and repeat the process. Just remember that if you have recruited a downline team you MUST provide them the support they require. After all, that's where most of your residual income will come from.
2. Expectations Too High
This is all too common. I see this over and over again. Many Affiliates do this. They join a program and start by placing a few free classified ads and putting a link on their webpage. After about 2 weeks they get dissapointed because they are not seeing any results.
Any Affiliate Program, however good it is, can only produce results if it is promoted properly. Don't get me wrong, free classifieds do work but it is going to take time. By time I mean that you are going to have to promote EVERY DAY!
Even if it is promoted properly it will take some time to reach the results you want to make a reasonable profit. Believing in the 'Get Rich Quick' hype, and not seeing a big check after the first month, they drop the program because they believe it's a dud!
Next they start searching to find the next "big thing" and when they do they jump on it's band wagon for a month or so.
Some people will continue this process over and over again until they finally give up on Internet success all together.
3. Not Knowing Your Products
No matter what type of program you choose to promote there will be a product or service involved. As an Affiliate your job is to find customers and convince them to purhcase these from you.
You must make your customers feel they need these benefits. Make them see what's in it for them!
It is my belief that you will not be able to relay to them all of the benefits that the product or service will provide them unless you really get to know everything there is about the products. Of course the best way is to purchase and use the products and service yourself. But most Affiliates never even try the products that they are promoting. Big mistake!
If you expect people to see enough quality and benefits to purchase your products/services then why aren't you using them? Nothing beats experience when telling others about it and your ad copy will reflect this enthusiasm.
Remember that as an Affiliate you are placing your name and reputation on the items that you promote. They better be good or you will lose credibility and customers.
If you promote software, use it yourself. If you promote a service, use it yourself. If you promote information products, read them and use them as training tools to help you earn more profits.
And here is a hint. You may even be able to make a commission on these products that you are using yourself by purchasing them in the name of a family member or close friend. You will probably need to use a different email address than the one you signed up to the program with as some programs do not view items for personal use as retail sales! (I speak from experience on this as I lost a commission on a product I purchased in my wife's name but used the email address I signed on with the affiliate program. They
viewed it as a personal purchase and the commissions went to my referrer.)
4. Limiting Your Advertising
Many affiliates put out a few classified ads and subscribe to newsletters to get free ads with them but that's as far as they go. This will work to an extent but it requires lots of effort for few results.
There are more ways to get your name and product in front of thousands of potential customers. What I am referring to is Viral Marketing.
I can imagine what you're thinking right now! What the heck is he talking about?
I'm talking about putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboards) and start writing articles, newsletters, reports, e-books, etc.
Most Affiliates don't do this and it is costing them the opportunity to get their name recognized on a grand scale. Viral products will promote their Affiliate links 24/7. This is a do it once and reap the benefits for months, or even years!
How many of you have downloaded free e-books, reports, etc. (My hand is up.) And why are they free? Simply because the author has his links embedded in them. Next we upload the ebook to our web site as a freebee for getting signups and it gets downloaded again. Starting to see the picture?
Use Viral Marketing and build an ever growing income and profit month after month.
5. Not Backending Your Customers
No I'm not turning this into an adult site!
Ask any internet marketing guru and they will probably tell you that creating back-end sales is one of the most important aspects of a successful online business.
What I am talking about here is getting the name and address of all your customers and marketing more of your products to them.
You should always find a way to capture the email address of as many prospects as possible. Offer a newsletter or free report or anything that will get the prospect to cough up that address. Then treat it like gold!!
This is the only way to keep the prospect available for you to market your other offers to. Don't throw them away when they buy once. You should be constantly building your own list to promote your offers to over and over again.

So, there you have it. Avoid these mistakes and you will be able to build a home business to be proud of and profit from.
