WEBSITE HOSTING

HOW TO GET YOUR WEB PAGE HOSTED ON THE INTERNET

Building a web page and saving it as an html document on your computer is fun, but it won't do you much good for getting customers and affiliate signups or selling your products.  You must transfer your web page to a web host (or, more precisely, to a web host’s server).  A web host is a person or company who will let you use space on their web servers to copy your web page and images to so they will be available for everyone using the internet to view.

Like everything, you must do your research before committing a lot of your hard earned money for web hosting!  There are plenty of good hosts to choose from but the one I chose, and I mentioned it before because it is the one with the free software, is very inexpensive and offers an excellent package. Here is the link again: click here.

Some of the things you should look for when considering a Hosting Service are:

  • Cost: Setup Fee, Monthly Fees.
  • Customer Service.
  • Contract Term: Understand the Term before your sign up!
  • Server Space: Usually measured in Megabytes. You won't need much to start out.
  • Server Usage: Measured by how much data is transferred during a given time period. Should be at least Gigabytes or unlimited. Be sure to read the terms of service carefully!
  • Technical Support. (You need this.)
  • Quality of Internet Connection.
  • Reliability: Little or no downtime.
  • Server backup.
  • Secure Server for taking orders.
  • CGI bin access.
  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol) access.
  • Script availability.
  • Availability of autoresponders.
  • Mailing List programs.
  • Number of POP email accounts.
  • Traffic Analysis.

To find a suitable host just go to a search engine and type in "Web Host", you will find thousands.  The choice is yours.

Most web hosts charge a fee for their services, however, some offer it for free. Free is good but it normally comes with a different kind of price! You may not pay money for the space but the hosting company will probably put their own banners or some other type of advertising on your site.  If you are simply using the site for banner exchanges this may not be much of an inconvenience to you.

To see what I am talking about, simply take a look at the following web page www.moneywonders.bizhosting.com . I am using a free web host Bizhosting.com and they put a banner on top of each page of my site. It does slow the loading of the page down considerably but it is my first web site and I am now putting more effort into my new site (this one) which I am paying for the hosting. It makes you look more professional also when you have your own domain name!

I have written an article on this very subject.  You should take a look at it here.

Paying for web hosting should not be too much of a concern to you as you can get great packages for as little as $4.95 per month!  Here is are two hosting sites I do recommend because of their excellent price, great support, (the great bonus software you will receive when you sign up with one of them) and good reputation.

1and1.

So, your next step is to find a web host and sign up.  There are lots of free hosting sites if that is the way you want to go.  You can find them by going to your favorite search engine and typing in "free web host" or something like that.  Also, you can check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) as many offer free web space to their internet customers.

When you sign up you will need to come up with a name for your web site (domain name).  Chances are, if you sign up with a free host, your domain name will be part of the parent company name (i.e. www.moneywonders.bizhosting.com ).  In that example, moneywonders is the name I came up with and bizhosting.com is the company which offers the free web space. Not very professional looking is it?  It’s also a lot harder to remember than mlmwonders.

Of course you can, and I strongly suggest you do, get your own domain name. A domain name like www.mlmwonders.com is a lot easier to remember than the one above, don't you think?  Once again prices vary for registering domain names.  Here are two places I highly recommend:

Great Domania (a little more expensive but excellent service) and 1and1.  I use both of them as I have more than one domain name registered.

Here is a free tool you can use to look up domain names you are thinking about using to see if they are available:

Now that you've signed up with a web host, you must transfer your html and image files to the host server.  You do this by using a File Transfer Protocol (ftp) program.  The web host may provide this for you.  If the host does not provide ftp capability, you can download ftp software for free.  You can simply do a search for "free ftp program" or something like that. I believe there is one called WS-FTP which can be downloaded for free.  I keep comming back to 1and1 because I really do like their service and, you can get a free professional FTP program when you sign up for a hosting package with them (at least it was available when I signed up).

For ease of working with your files, I suggest that when you upload them you keep them all in one directory.  You could make separate directories for your html files and for your image files, but it is extra work and you will have to change all of the links in your web page code to point to the proper directory.  I suggest one directory because when you built your web page in the previous tutorial and put in your image source (img src) codes, they can simply be left the way you typed them (i.e. img src="banner1.jpg").  My new web site (the one you are looking at) has over 150 pages and hundreds of images, all in one directory, with no problems.

Now that your files have been uploaded to the host server, all you need to do is go to any search engine and type in the address of your new web site (i.e. www.yoursite.com if you purchased a domain name, or www.yoursite.thewebhost.com if you are using a free web host and your domain is part of their domain name). If you did everything right, you should see your web page in your browser!

If you happen to see little red x's where your banners or images should be, then you must check your html code and make sure you used the proper img src code.

If you happen to see just a directory listing make sure you named your home page “index.html” and that there are no spaces in it. (i.e. index .html will not work.)

SUMMARY

That was a very quick tutorial on how to upload a web page.  As you can see building a web page and getting it on the world wide web is as easy as typing html code into a notepad document, saving it as an html document, signing up for a web host package, and uploading your documents (html and images) to a web server.

So what are you waiting for, log onto your internet service, find a cheap (but reliable) web host (I strongly suggest 1and1), get yourself a domain name (once again, I suggest Great Domania or 1and1), upload the html and image files to your web host and start sending visitors to it.

One way to get visitors to your site is to use banner exchange programs.  They are free, easy to use (now that you have a web page) and there are lots to choose from.

If you are not sure about banner exchange programs, simply take a look at this short tutorial I have produced just for you!

If you have any questions about building a web page, uploading your docs to a web host, doing banner exchanges, or anything else to do with advertising your site or mlm in general, don't hesitate to contact me, I'll be glad to help where I can.

To Your Continued Success;
