Calvin Klein is an American classic – a brand that has defined and continues to define American style through meaningful collaborations. At the start of this year, the label exploited Preston Heron, American artist, creative and DJ to show his love for streetwear and his imagination for Calvin Klein. Since launching his eponymous brand in 2017, Preston has taken the fashion world by storm. Having worked with people like Virgil Abloh by Off-White and Louis Vuitton and Justin saunders from JJJJound, it aims to keep fashion “easy, accessible and functional”.

In honor of this second partnership with Calvin Klein, Preston met Vanity Show to discuss the inspiration and design principles behind the line.

What inspired you to create this second collection with Calvin Klein?

I’ve lived in New York since 2004 so I really wanted to do a collection that captures the city. I spent most of the time during the lockdown in the city so I got to know him intimately and with Calvin Klein being a New York brand that certainly made an impact. This collection is simple, accessible and functional – it’s designed for everyone’s lifestyle.

Can you explain the evolution from the first collection to the second collection?

The first collection was really about setting the tone for what I wanted to do with Calvin Klein and required going through the archives and learning the basics. I really built on that in this collection and wanted to push it forward. We have seasons in New York, which allowed me to really pump up the pieces and play around with new silhouettes, fabrics, colors and textures that we didn’t have the chance to explore with the first collection – all. by perfecting some cross styles of the last collection.

It is mentioned that this collection is the expression of our common principles, do you find it important to have a wardrobe of essentials and must-have pieces?

Clothes are made to be worn and easy to wear. I have found that the construction and refinement of these essentials makes the wearer feel comfortable and allows them to go about their daily lives with complete transparency. With this collection you can mix and match as you like, layer it in different ways and easily fit it into your existing wardrobe. Calvin Klein already tells this story of expression through essential elements and I wanted to be part of it through my own lens. That’s why you see my own special details like hints of orange stitching on the t-shirt cuffs and hoodie sleeves to the orange logo on the back of each garment.

You gave new life to traditional classics, how would you describe this redesign and reorientation?

With this collection, we were really obsessed with details and wanted to find the most perfect fit possible – it wasn’t about changing everything, but more so about having lasting qualities engineered into these pieces that allow it to fit. be functional, practical and high.

Tell us more about the elements and aspects of sustainability behind the collection.

Durability is a great quality and it’s something I consider in all of my designs so I wanted to push this idea as much as possible. We’ve incorporated recycled plastic bottles into the denim, we’ve got organic cottons and recycled nylon in the jogging pants – all done in a way that doesn’t sacrifice design and style. It was easier to incorporate more durable elements into the collection because CK had already moved in this direction.

What was it like designing for an American heritage brand?

Calvin Klein is such an important American brand that defines our vision of the classic wardrobe. I also grew up watching these iconic commercials, so being able to go into the archives and feel these pieces and look at the pictures got me excited. The partnership feels natural and began by simply expanding these iconic CK underwear and the white shirt. It really goes beyond product design and placement for me, I really wanted to reshape and develop something new while respecting the history of Calvin Klein.
